WAGGGS and Greenpeace Flag for the Future Competition

WAGGGS and Greenpeace Flag for the Future Competition
UPDATED Information for Member Organisations.
In June 2012, Greenpeace International launched the Save the Arctic campaign to get the Arctic declared a global sanctuary, free from commercial mining and fishing and not owned by any one nation.
WAGGGS has signed on to the campaign as a major partner. This partnership included two Girl Guides/Girl Scouts travelling to the Arctic on Greenpeace’s ship the Arctic Sunrise, to make a film about their experiences. The film, Northbound, was released in December 2012 to launch the Flag for the Future Competition.

The Flag for the Future competition is a global competition for 6-26 year olds to design a flag that represents peace, global community and hope. This flag will be planted on the seabed at the North Pole to mark the spot where a pod with the names of the millions of people who have signed the Save the Arctic petition will be planted.

WAGGGS previously asked Member Organizations to help collect and judge entries in their country. This is no longer necessary, as the judging will be managed by Greenpeace International.

We encourage Member Organizations to promote the competition in their country, both to their membership base and to youth generally. Interested groups can watch the video and use our resources to learn about the Arctic and climate change.

How the competition will work
* The competition is open to all 6-26 year olds, not just Girl Guides and Girl Scouts
* The competition is now open. The deadline for entries is 27th February 2013.
* Entries can be made electronically or by post
* Shortlisted entries will be voted on by a panel, made up of representatives from Greenpeace, WAGGGS and celebrities, including fashion designer Vivienne Westwood
* The winning entry will be made into a flag to be planted on the ocean bed at the North Pole

It is simple to enter the competition, just:
1. Download the design template,
2. Complete your design (either electronically or by hand) and then either:
3. Take a photograph of your design, or scan it in. If you made your design digitally, upload it using the online submission form. If you created your design on paper, take a photo and scan and upload it or send it to us by post or email.

** PLEASE NOTE **
We can only accept .jpg or .png files with a maximum size of 500kb. PDF files will not attach to the form. If you do not receive a 'thank you' confirmation message on screen, your entry has not been submitted. Please scroll down and check for error messages.

* OPTIONAL – Member Organizations are also invited to put on an exhibition in connection to the competition. This could be a display of the entries in your country, along with the international shortlist, which WAGGGS and Greenpeace will WAGGGS will publish after the competition deadline. You could also promote your own environment projects at the same time.

We would like as many young people in as many countries as possible to enter. If you want to get involved please email harriet@wagggs.org so we can keep track of how many entries to expect, help to promote your activities and connect you with your local Greenpeace Office who may be able to support you.

Benefits of getting involved in the competition
• WAGGGS and Greenpeace International will connect our various country level offices together, so this is a good way to forge strong partnerships
• As the competition is open to all young people, it is potentially a good membership recruitment campaign, as you will be interacting with many young people not already Girl Guides/Girl Scouts
• There will be some good publicity opportunities, especially at the end of the competition when judging will take place at Vivienne Westwood’s studio in London on 8th March 2013.
• Research and consultation with Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world indicates that the environment and climate change is a top priority for girls and young women, so you are offering opportunities to your members to take action on global issues important to them

Things to note:

  • This competition is optional.
  • Guides can choose to enter as individuals or groups.
  • If you have entered this competition, please email Ms Teng for her to key into the school system.
Thank You!

·         Here are the instructions and rubrics for WAGGGS 3.1 presentation:
·         Guides will work in their buddy patrols to come up with a 10 - minute presentation regarding WAGGGS 3.1 prior to the CCA session. They can use Powerpoint slides to aid in the presentation
·         During their WAGGGS 3.1 session, the two buddy patrols will present. After each presentation, there will be a 5-minute Q & A session when the other buddy patrol, as well as the testers, will be given time to pose some questions and uncertainties to the presenting buddy patrol. Testers are to ask questions pertaining to what the buddy patrol had just presented on to test knowledge on how well they know what they were presenting on regarding WAGGGS 3.1. No reference is allowed during the Q & A session
·         Buddy patrols are encouraged to make a skit or do their presentation in an interesting manner
·         Buddy patrols will be graded as a whole based on their presentation as well as their ability to answer the Q&A questions.
·         Patrols 1&2/5&6/9&10 will be presenting on WAGGGS - what it stands for, when and how it was formed, its founding members, its objectives, applications for WAGGGS membership, the difference between Associate & Full membership, when to apply for membership, purpose of Associate membership and what membership Singapore has.
·         The other buddy patrols will be presenting on WAGGGS membership - the rules that each national organisation must adhere to, membership in the 1900-93 triennium, current membership list by region, logos of the regions and regional group. If there is extra time, they can also share about the different trefoils, uniforms, their memberships in WAGGGS and interesting Guiding facts of countries.
·         Refer to pages 241-243 in Guides handbook for reference
·         PSes are to take charge in coordinating the presentation.
